Mention of the Day (MOTD)
Apr 27, 2021
strangefruitmotd, rosenbergmotd
Black and white photo or Billie Holiday singing on stage in front of a microphone. She wears a floral patterned dress and a fur stole. Her eyes are closed, head tilted to the left, she is singing. 4 band members accompany her including 2 saxophonists, 1 trumpet, & 1 upright bass player. All wear suits. A piano and music stands are visible.

Sharing this excellent piece about the history of the iconic protest song "Strange Fruit" for today's joint Strange Fruit & Rosenberg Mention of the Day: From the article, "In the 21st century, 'Strange Fruit' has lived on, sampled in the 2000 song 'What’s Really Going On,' in which the singer Dwayne Wiggins recounts an episode of racial profiling at the hands of the police in Oakland, Calif. And in 2021, as the nation continues to reckon with a series of killings of unarmed Black people by the police — often captured in gruesome footage of Black men being shot or, in the case of George Floyd, knelt on by white officers — 'Strange Fruit' has maintained its place in the national conversation about racism."

"Thank you for the grant to cover my son's academic & sports activities. As I'm sure you know, it is difficult working for social change. To me, the grant is a gift and a form of validation and encouragement."
