Activist Family Members Threatened and Charged $6100 for therapy, tuition, bicycles and supplies for a therapy animal, two Targeted Activist Youth (TAY) [1] Development grants and a Carry it Forward (CIF) [2] award for five siblings ages 15-24 who have fought alongside their activist parents against genocide and human rights violations at home and around the world. Several of the children, as well as their parents, have either been arrested themselves or had police come unannounced to their home and schools to threaten and harass them. PA
Environmental Activist Targeted by FBI $2000 for tuition for the 15 year-old daughter of a longtime environmentalist and organizer. Her activist father has been called a domestic terrorist, threatened with imprisonment and subjected to multiple FBI raids for his efforts to save the planet. NY
Mom Fights for Equity in Schools $1500 for music programs for the 16 year-old son of a longtime organizer for educational equity. As a result of her speaking up for racially and economically marginalized students who were forced into dangerous environments at school, her son was excluded from programs, field trips and extracurricular opportunities available to all other students. CA
Reproductive Justice Advocate Faces Prison A $1000 TAY Development Grant for a 25 year-old pro-choice activist charged under the FACE act for “conspiring against civil rights” after allegedly spray painting the outside of a “pregnancy crisis center” (aka fake abortion clinic). FL
CIVIL LIBERTIES
Fathers Falsely Accused $8700 for homeschooling expenses and two CIF awards for seven children, ages 10 to 23, from two families. Their fathers spoke out against the Iraq war and were falsely accused of terrorist activity and hunted by the FBI as a result. GA
Activists Forced Out of Work $6000 for music equipment, tutoring and therapy for four children, ages six to 18, from three families whose parents were fired for advocating for racial justice and free press rights. CA, MI, MN
Journalist Stabbed $1500 for tutoring for the 11-year-old daughter whose father, a journalist, was attacked while covering a neo-Nazi rally. He was arrested and had his camera confiscated while his attacker walked free. CA
Antifascist Protester Imprisoned $1500 for gymnastics for the three year-old son whose father is in prison for throwing a folding chair in self defense while protesting a rally of armed and violent white supremacists in his community. Members of the rally were not charged. CA
Mom Targeted $1000 for martial arts training for the nine year-old girl whose mom went public about being stopped by a Customs and Border Patrol agent because she was speaking Spanish. She took legal action and had to move to escape the harassment she endured for speaking out. Location Withheld
ENVIRONMENTAL & ANIMAL RIGHTS
Parents Fight to Protect Environment $28,500 for a broad range of programs for 18 children, ages one to 23, from seven families. Some parents were beaten and arrested while marching against environmental racism, while others were attacked or imprisoned for their organizing work. CA, GA, NY, VA
Environmental Racism Protesters Targeted $8100 for educational and sports programs and a CIF award for six children, ages four to 19, from three families who have spent years organizing against environmental racism in their communities and have faced targeting by employers and police. AL
Young Environmental Activist Expelled $1500 for homeschooling support for a 16 year-old who was expelled from school and harassed after he began a public protest every Friday afternoon to raise awareness of global heating. WI
GENDER, SEXUALITY & REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS
Parents and Children Fight for Trans Rights $11,500 for school tuition and camps for seven children, ages 10 to 15, from three families fighting for transgender rights. In response to the public-facing activism of the parents and their children, they received hate messages from around the world and were swarmed and shoved by violent counter-protesters. One family had to relocate to an asylum state for trans youth. Location Withheld
Reproductive Justice Organizers Threatened $4500 for tutoring, soccer and tuition for three children, ages seven to 18, from two families that faced severe harassment and attacks as a result of their fights for reproductive justice. Location Withheld
Gender Justice Authors Face Bans $3000 for therapy and summer camps for two children, ages 14 and 15, whose activist parents authored a children’s book about gender-nonconforming youth that is being banned widely by right-wing politicians. The entire family has received hate mail and threats of doxxing as a result. MA
Teen Activist Creating Safer World $1500 for photography supplies for an 18-year-old drag performer and gender liberation activist who builds safe spaces for gender-nonconforming youth despite years of harassment. NY
Mother Threatened with Loss of Son $1500 for equine therapy for the 17-year-old daughter whose mother, an LGBTQIA+ rights activist, was threatened by the state with the removal of one of her children because of her organizing. OR
HUMAN RIGHTS
Parents Forced to Flee $8000 for educational and sports activities for five children, ages eight to 19, from four families whose parents fled their home countries for the U.S. after their human rights activism put them in immediate danger. IL, MA, NY
Activist Mother Loses Work $3000 for DJ equipment and dance classes for the 13 and 18 year-old sisters whose mom advocated against racism and rape culture in schools. In retaliation, she lost important contracts with the local schools and government and was forced to relocate. OK
IMMIGRANTS' RIGHTS
Immigrants’ Rights Advocates Targeted $11,840 for school supplies and camps for eight children, ages five to 19, from three families. Their parents were targeted and threatened by ICE as a result of their work exposing injustices in the immigration system. Location Withheld
Dad Targeted While in Sanctuary $2200 for driver’s ed and a CIF award for two siblings, ages 16 and 21, whose father is an immigrants’ rights leader. Since being denied a stay of deportation and entering sanctuary, DHS and ICE officials have escalated threats and pressure against him. Location Withheld
Father Deported $2000 for school supplies for the 18 year-old girl whose father was detained and deported in an apparent act of retaliation for his years of leadership within the immigrants’ rights movement. Location Withheld
LABOR & ECONOMIC JUSTICE
Mom Fights Workplace Discrimination $6000 for sports programs for four children ages seven to 16 whose mother was harassed and fired for forming a group within her workplace for employees to share stories of workplace discrimination and stand up for one another. TX
Mom Fired for Advocacy $4000 for school tuition for two kids, ages 13 and 17, whose mother was fired for advocating for the needs of her marginalized students. GA
Educator Fired and Harassed $3000 for tutoring for the two children, ages 12 and 18, whose mother, a teacher, fought for the well-being of all students after her young autistic child was physically assaulted by a school aide. As a result of her efforts, the school fired the mother and reported her as an unfit parent. AL
Mother Fired for Advocating for Anti-Racist Workplace $3000 for track expenses for two children, ages 12 and 17, whose mom was fired after she advocated for an anti-racist framework at her job. She was subsequently harassed, and her home was threatened, forcing the family to move. NC
Union Organizer Fired $1000 for school tuition for the 12-year-old daughter whose mother was fired for organizing a union at her Starbucks. TN
PEACE
Children and Parents Working Together for Peace $14,650 for a wide range of programs for 10 children, ages seven to 20, from four families in pacifist communities. Their parents have engaged in peaceful anti-war protests and many have been imprisoned for civil disobedience. NC, ME, VA, WA
Bruce Miller Legacy Fund Grant Support for Children of Torture Survivors $5000 for a group grant for occupational therapy and enrichment activities for kids whose activist parents survived torture in their home countries. The program serves 13 children, ages 11 to 23, from six families. IL
Peace Activist Doxxed $3000 for dance, karate and camp for the six and 10 year-old children whose mother was arrested and then doxxed for peacefully occupying the property of a major weapons manufacturer to protest the genocide in Gaza. ME
Peace Activist’s Vehicle Vandalized $2000 for soccer and tutoring for the 16-year-old grandson whose grandmother (with whom he lives part time) travels the U.S. advocating for social justice. In response to her activism, her vehicle has been vandalized on numerous occasions and drivers have tried to run her off the road. GA
PRISONERS’ RIGHTS/U.S. POLITICAL PRISONERS
Mothers Threatened for Helping Prisoners $6600 for school and sports expenses and a CIF award for five children, ages 11 to 20, from two families. Their mothers have been denied jobs or threatened with prosecution for advocating for individuals wronged in the criminal justice system. AL, NY
Sons of Political Prisoners Targeted $6000 for school tuition and academic enrichment camps for four children, ages 14 to 19, from two families. Both fathers, themselves the sons of political prisoners, have experienced harassment and job loss because of their activism. GA, PA
Former Political Prisoners Continue the Fight $3500 for orchestra, camp and sports for three children, ages 16 and 17, from two families. Their fathers were incarcerated for anti-apartheid and anti-racist efforts, and both continue to face targeting for their work to free political prisoners and end human trafficking. GA, MA
RACIAL JUSTICE
Fathers Fired and Harassed for Organizing $14,400 for tuition and sports programs and two CIF awards for ten children, ages two to 18, from four families. The fathers all lost their jobs or faced police harassment for their public-facing antiracism organizing work. CO, GA
Parents Threatened by Police $9100 for film and photography supplies, cultural programming and a CIF award for six children, ages one to 22, from two related families. Their parents have been threatened and one has been jailed because of their work for racial and gender justice. OR
Fighting Racism in Education Costs Families $6200 for education support and two CIF awards for six kids, ages seven to 19, from two families involved in the fight for racial justice in education. All have worked to improve equity in schools and universities and have been harassed and/or have lost their jobs as a result of their organizing. GA
Mothers Persist Despite Violent Intimidation $5000 for homeschooling and gardening supplies, gymnastics and therapy for three children, ages six to 19, from three families. Their mothers are leaders in the fight for police reform, immigration reform and racial justice. They have received death threats, attention from white supremacists and pressure to relocate their families. MD, TX, WA
Student Activist Harassed $2000 for school supplies for a 17-year-old Black student in a majority-white school who filed a civil rights lawsuit after a teacher shoved and berated her for declining to say the pledge of allegiance. SC
Peaceful Organizer Charged $1500 for therapy for the 17-year-old child of a racial justice organizer who was unjustly arrested at a peaceful protest. Because prosecutors charged her with gang involvement, she faced up to eight years in jail. AZ
Students Fight for Justice in Higher Education $1000 for a TAY Development grant for the 23 year-old college student who was beaten and charged with felonies for peacefully protesting the profound inequities in their state’s education system. FL
CIF AWARDS
$4200 for seven CIF awards for seven young adult beneficiaries from five families. Their parents are active organizers for reproductive justice, global human rights and more. One is a targeted racial justice activist herself. FL, IL, OK, TX
GROCERY GIFT CARDS
$2,500 to provide $200 grocery gift cards for current RFC beneficiary families facing emergency circumstances.
