Rosenberg Sons React to Release of Grand Jury Testimony
(Statement of Michael and Robert Meeropol)

September 11, 2008- We, the sons of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, applaud today’s release by the NARA of the Grand Jury testimony of 42 of the 45 witnesses called before that body in 1950, leading to the Rosenbergs’ indictment. Since we launched the effort to reopen the Rosenberg Case in 1973, we have maintained that the public and family members deserve every bit of information any government agency holds about the case.

Therefore we hope for the eventual release of the testimony of the remaining 3 witnesses, particularly the statements made to the Grand Jury by Ethel Rosenberg’s brother, David Greenglass. After 58 years, it is past time to lift this unnecessary veil of secrecy. We do, however, consider this release a major step in the right direction.

We look forward to reviewing the vast amount of material released today and assessing how it adds to and affects the historical record available to us and the general public. It is our hope that this release will refocus the simmering debate surrounding our parents’ case upon the witnesses’ testimony, the evidence, and the fairness of the judicial proceedings. We will look with particular interest at any Grand Jury testimony concerning our mother, since previously released FBI files indicate almost none was presented and that the critical testimony against her in court was concocted shortly before the trial.
