AMHERST - Robert H. Meeropol was 6 years old when his parents were executed as spies. Now he is offering his perspective on WikiLeaks, whose founder he claims could be charged with the same crime.

Meeropol, of Easthampton, is the younger son of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were put to death in 1953 for conspiring to violate the Espionage Act of 1917 by passing information about the atomic bomb to the Soviets.

Meeropol will speak Saturday at Jones Library's annual observance of Thomas Paine's birthday. The event is sponsored by the local branch of Thomas Paine Friends Inc., a non-profit that promotes recognition of the colonial activist.

NORTHAMPTON - ...Robert Meeropol, executive director of the Rosenberg Fund for Children in Easthampton, linked the fate of his birth parents to some of the same civil rights issues being debated today. The fund he runs today honors Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, who were executed as Soviet spies in 1953.

"We help kids of parents whose civil rights have been violated," Meeropol said. "Wouldn't it be wonderful if we lived in a country where this fund wasn't necessary?"  Read the full story at the link above.

The fight to protect Julian Assange
RTTV [12]

The US Espionage Act of 1917 is a threat to an open society; used to send dissenters to prison for voicing their opinions, transforming dissent into treason, argued Robert Meeropol. Will WikiLeak’s Julian Assange be its next victim?
