Mention of the Day (MOTD)
Ago 10, 2023

Today's Strange Fruit mention comes from The Tennessee Tribune, highlighting a visual art project by Stanley Campbell Sr., the Memphis "Foot" Man. Campbell films himself in character to "remind, educate, and rebuild," and serve as a powerful embodiment of the courage displayed by the "gallant foot soldiers" who fought for justice and change in the 1960s.

Gone down a wrong road on a recent shoot in Mississippi, he says the lyrics of "Strange Fruit" came to mind. At first he was unnerved when he discovered he'd stumbled near to the site where Schwerner, Goodman and Chaney were murdered. Then he realized the location would serve his project's intentions well: to honor civil rights movement activists. “It was the best decision I’d made,” he says.

"As an artist committed to social justice and civil liberties, I am deeply gratified to stand with the family of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, Angela Davis, and a new generation of political activists to forge an unbreakable link between the struggles of the past and of the present."  -V (formerly Eve Ensler), RFC Advisory Board Member
